Meet the Clinician

Jacob Clark, MS, LPC

A Thoughtful,
Collaborative Approach to Psychotherapy

I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor who has practiced psychotherapy in Northern Virginia since 2022. My clinical training includes psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and trauma-focused care, and my academic work in the field of trauma has also been recognized.

I am interested in more than getting you through the week. Therapy can be a place to slow down, understand the patterns that keep showing up in your life, and make sense of the experiences and relationships that have shaped you. My work is informed by psychodynamic and psychoanalytic traditions, but the work itself begins with what is happening in your life now.

How I Think About Therapy

People often come to therapy because something is not working: a relationship feels stuck, the same problem keeps returning, a difficult experience will not stay in the past, or the ways they have learned to cope are no longer enough. Those problems matter. So does the person living with them. Therapy isn’t just managing symptoms or finding the right label. A diagnosis can be useful, but it is only one part of the picture. I am interested in who you are, what you have had to adapt to, what you need now, and what keeps getting in the way. Psychodynamic therapy gives us room to look at those questions carefully. We pay attention to patterns, relationships, emotions, and the parts of your experience that may be hard to put into words at first. The work is collaborative. We talk about what feels important, what feels difficult, and what is changing—or not changing—along the way.

Why I Became a Therapist

I became a therapist in part because I know how lonely it can feel to be struggling while the rest of your life is still asking you to perform. As a teenager, I was trying to make it as a competitive tennis player while also coming to terms with things from my past. I received mental-health treatment, but I also had to do a lot of figuring things out on my own. That experience stayed with me. It made me interested in what people need when the outside of their life looks one way but the inside feels much more complicated. I became a therapist because I want to help people make sense of that gap—to understand what they are carrying, what they need in the present, and what kind of future feels possible.

Areas of Clinical Focus

Trauma-Related Concerns

Difficult, stressful, and traumatic experiences can continue to shape the present long after they are over. Therapy can make room to understand their impact without reducing a person to what happened to them.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

For people who want to understand the patterns beneath the immediate problem, psychodynamic psychotherapy offers a way to look more closely at relationships, emotions, and experience over time.

Therapy for Teens

Teenagers are often trying to manage more than adults can see. I work with teens and families around the emotional, relational, academic, behavioral, and developmental challenges that can make that time especially difficult.

ADHD Therapy

ADHD can affect more than attention. It can show up in planning, follow-through, emotional regulation, relationships, and the way someone experiences daily pressure.

Credentials, Research, & Training

I take the work seriously. My clinical work is informed by ongoing study in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, EMDR, and the questions that arise when we look closely at trauma, development, and the people who do this work. I have practiced psychotherapy in Northern Virginia since 2022, and I continue to build on my training through clinical work, continuing education, and research.
